Introduces Bell, Shoemake, and Chen trackball implementations and provides a comparison of the method. Also discusses user studies on each method. Useablity studies on Bell technique is a possible research topic.

Losasso and Hoppe describe an approach for managing LODs for large terrain datasets. The "geometry clipmap" technique uses a series of nested regular grids that are centered on the viewer's location, to optimally feed the graphics pipeline. This technique does not require preprocessing of refinement criteria and can be created on-the-fly.
